Learn to Study for Success at College and University

Mindcool

By Professor Aidan Moran. Going to college or university is an exciting yet daunting experience for many students. It's exciting because you can study interesting subjects, make new friends, and pursue new hobbies in college. But it's also daunting, because in order to get a successful academic education, you will have to accept personal responsibility for a task for which you have received little or no special training in school. This task requires you to manage your own learning or to become an active, independent, and self-motivated student when it comes to planning, conducting, and evaluating your academic work. For example, it's up to you whether you go to lectures in the first place. And it's up to you whether you spend your time studying in the library or going to the shops. And it's your business, not that of your lecturers, to make sure that you don't fall behind in your studies.

Put simply, if you don't want your free time in college to become wasted time, you will have to master a number of study skills that were not taught earlier in school. For example, you will have to learn to listen and write at the same time when taking lecture notes in class. And you'll have to learn to study effectively - or read with a question in mind. Of course, you'll also have to master the art of getting down to study regardless of the mood you're in. But most of all, you'll have to learn to think for yourself - the true hallmark of an educated mind.

Put simply, as you can see, your biggest challenge in the years ahead is to manage your own learning effectively. The good news is that by listening to this audio presentation, you've already taken a step in the right direction.

Audiobook: Mental toughness in Golf - 2 Pre-shot routines

Mindcool

In cart Not available Out of stock

Have you ever wondered why golfers like to prepare for every shot in the same methodical way? For example, they always line up their target and set-up their shots in a consistent manner and they take the same number of practice swings each time. In golf, this preferred sequence of preparatory thoughts and actions is called a “pre-shot routine”. Its main objective is to help players to clear their minds and warm-up their bodies so that they can focus completely on producing a comfortable and consistent swing. Such consistency is crucial for success in golf.

There are 10 audio recordings in this series including: Concentration, course management, developing mental toughness, enjoying your golf, first tee nerves, handling mistakes and setbacks, increasing your confidence, performing under pressure, pre-shot routines, and putting well.

Audiobook: Mental toughness in Golf - 3 Concentration

Mindcool

Concentration, or the ability to focus on the task at hand while ignoring distractions, is crucial for success in golf. This is true because golf is a “stop-start” game in which at least 90% of your time on the course is spent doing something other than hitting the ball. And because there is a lot of walking and mental “down time” between your shots, a multitude of distractions can arise and divert your focus from the present moment. For example, a sudden noise or movement from a playing partner could upset your swing or you may find yourself thinking too far ahead as you face a putt. And like most players, you probably find it difficult to forget about a missed opportunity that occurred several holes back. Unfortunately, each of these distractions could prove costly to your score. That’s why Paul Azinger, a 12-time winner on the PGA tour, revealed that “staying in the present is the key to the golfer’s game: Once you start thinking about a shot you just messed up or what you have to do on the next nine to catch somebody, you’re lost”. This point was echoed by Trevor Immelman who, after his victory at the US Masters tournament, said that he’d been “totally in the present” during the final round.

Given the importance of concentration in golf, it is no wonder that coaches and psychologists have developed a variety of techniques to improve it.

There are 10 audio recordings in this series including: Concentration, course management, developing mental toughness, enjoying your golf, first tee nerves, handling mistakes and setbacks, increasing your confidence, performing under pressure, pre-shot routines, and putting well.
