It’s competition time in your local club and you’re standing on the first tee along with your playing partners. You’re feeling a little anxious because you want to get off to a good start … but you’re not used to people watching you … and you’re not feeling very confident about your game. As you wait, you can feel yourself getting more nervous than usual. To make matters worse, negative thoughts start to creep into your mind – thoughts like: “I should have arrived earlier. I find it hard to play well in this kind of weather. I wish I’d practised more. What if it all goes wrong and I mishit my drive? That could be really embarrasing”. At this stage, your heart is beginning to pound, you have butterflies in your stomach and your hands begin to tremble. Unaware of your inner turmoil, however, the player before you hits the ball straight down the fairway and walks away … smiling. Now, it’s your turn to play.

Standing on the first tee of a competition can make even the most experienced of golfers feel nervous.
